Medical Emergencies

  • Site of emergency – if the emergency occurs in a room – dial 333, if it occurs elsewhere please go to the reception desk.
  • If 333 has been dialled, the emergency phone will ring in the reception area, and sirens and lights will go off. One of the reception staff will answer the phone and will ascertain where is the emergency.
  • Once the reception staff have been informed of the emergency and where it has occurred they will set off the klaxon.
  • All medical staff (doctors and nurses) who are in the building should go immediately to the reception desk to find out where the emergency is. The medical staff should NOT phone reception. Practice nurse to collect emergency bag with her. Once all the medical staff are at the reception desk and have found out where the emergency has happened – a team of 2 doctors and 2 nurses go to help out with the emergency. If an emergency occurs in one of the waiting areas or in the surrounding corridors one of the reception staff will organise the rest of the patients away from the emergency.
  • In absence of any doctors/nurses attending then dial 999 followed by emergency contact of the Duty Doctor.

Personal Safety

Any staff who feel personally threatened (physically or verbally) by the behaviour of another individual should attempt to remove themselves from the immediate threat and seek help.  If such a staff member is isolated in a consulting room during this situation, they can activate the panic alarm to summon help.
