The practice will be closed for staff training on Wednesday the 23rd of May from 13.00hrs.

Emergency medical advice can be obtained from NHS24 for the remainder of the day.

The practice will reopen its normal service at 08.00hrs on Thursday 24th of May.

The Howden Health Centre will be closed on Tuesday the 5th of June. Emergency medical advice will be available from NHS24. We will reopen for service as usual from 8am on Wednesday the 6th of June.

Farewell to Jacqui Crosbie

Howden bade a fond farewell to Jacqui Crosbie this month, after 15 years as our Practice Manager.

Jacqui has overseen many eventful years in the practice, with many changes in our line-up of GPs and nurses, as well as major changes in the primary care service as a whole.

She has now moved on to a fresh challenge in another GP practice in Edinburgh, and we all wish her the best in the next phase of her career.

GUM and Family Planning

The GUM and Family Planning Clinics at Howden Health Centre have changed! All clinics now operate as an Integrated Sexual Health Service combining GUM and Family Planning.

The service provides a combination of Walk-In and Booked Clinics. If you can, please phone to make an appointment as the Walk-In clinics have limited capacity.

Claire Chase is leaving us at the end of September to start a well earned retirement from Practice Nursing.

Claire has been a core member of the nursing team at Howden since 2004.

New Phlebotomist joins the Howden team!

Anne Bell (Phlebotomist)

We would like to welcome our new phlebotomist, Anne Bell, who will be starting work in the practice on Monday 26^th September. Anne has previously spent many years working as a phlebotomist at Quotient Bioresearch (formerly Inveresk) and is looking forward to joining our team.

Her hours of work will be 9am – 1pm, Monday – Friday, and she will routinely be providing 10 minute appointments for venepuncture. In addition she will undertake any domiciliary venepuncture for housebound patients.

Maternity leave for Dr McCool

Dr Nadine McCool will be going on maternity leave from Monday 3^rd October 2011. We anticipate that she will be returning to the practice at the end of August 2012.

Written repeat prescription requests only

Past experience has taught us that the most reliable and safe way of ensuring that requests for prescriptions are accurate is for you to make them in writing.

Delays often occur when requests are made verbally, as well as the tendency for errors with names and doses of medicines.

As a result we are moving to a Written-request only system from Monday 18th of July 2011.

The option to request your medication by telephone will no longer be available.

Severe Weather update – Howden Health Centre

The practice is open as usual for any patients who need to see a GP or nurse. We are continuing to provide a mixture of booked and same-day appointments, and the open access surgery is running as usual.

However, staffing levels are less predictable than usual due to the effect of the severe weather on travel.

Please be patient if we have to change your appointments at short notice.
