Situation:
A patient requests Hepatitis B
vaccination.
Are they
entitled to it on the NHS?
YES if
a...
- Parental
drug misuser.
- Close
family contact of a case or carrier.

Post-exposure prophylaxis
-
Haemophiliac.
- Person
with learning difficulties
in residential accommodation.
- Baby born
to a HbsAg-positive mother.
- Patient
with chronic renal failure prior to
renal dialysis or transplantation.
Issue a GP10
for the vaccine and advise the patient
to make an appointment with the practice
nurse.
NO for...
- Those
requiring vaccination for their
employment.
Advise them
that they need to contact their
occupational health department, who
should arrange vaccination. Give them
them the
Occupational Hep B letter.pdf for
information.

Travellers to areas of high
prevalence.
- Inform of
cost of £120 for vaccination course.
- Need to
sign relevant form –
Travel Hep B form.pdf.
- Money to
be paid to receptionist in advance.
- Advise to
make an appointment with the
practice nurse.
NB: For those
receiving the Hep B vaccination
privately
NO
prescription needs to be issued as the
drug will be obtained from the pharmacy
by the practice nurse for
administration. Subsequently the
pharmacy will bill the health centre for
it. Patients need to be informed that
the £120 will cover the cost of the 3
vaccines, administration of the vaccine
and blood test to check immunisation. IF
booster doses of Hepatitis B are
required then these will have to be paid
for separately.
