Controlled Drug Policy

  • General Practitioners and GP Registrars are required to hold stocks of Controlled Drugs for use for emergency treatment of patients in their care. This document outlines the policy for doctors working at the Howden Health Centre, Livingston.
  • A stock of Controlled Drugs will be maintained in the lockable on-call bag. When not in use, this bag will be stored in a locked storeroom. Only nominated members of staff will have access to this storeroom.
  • The practice has elected to use Morphine as the only Controlled Drug for parenteral use. Other Controlled Drugs may be prescribed for patients on an individual basis using a GP10 prescription.
  • A register of Controlled Drugs will be kept in the on-call bag.
  • A contemporaneous record of Controlled Drugs administered or supplied will be maintained in this register.
  • The GPs who take possession of the on-call bag each day will be responsible for performing a stock check with reference to the Controlled Drug register. Any discrepancies will be raised at a practice meeting and investigated. These GPs will also be responsible for replenishing the stock in the bag as required.
  • Out-of-date stock will only be destroyed in the presence of a police officer. This can be arranged in conjunction with the Howden pharmacy's 6-monthly police visit.

Duty Doctor Emergency Drugs

  • The Duty Doctor bag is stocked with emergency equipment and medication.
  • Doctors who use any supplies from this bag need to replace the stocks from the Health Centre drug cupboard.
  • A monthly check is made by a nominated practice nurse, who will check that the bag is fully stocked, and that all medicines are within their expiry dates.
  • Controlled drugs are restocked only by the doctors.
