Smoking Cessation Protocol

Howden is committed to providing appropriate support to patients who want to stop smoking.

Ask about smoking at every opportunity

  • Opportunistic during routine consultations
  • Systematically for all new patients
  • Systematically as part of Chronic Disease Reviews

Advise smokers to stop

  • Assess motivation to change smoking habits

Assist smokers to stop

Arrange follow up and appropriate referral if neccessary

  • Advise self referral to the Smoking Cessation Clinic (SCC) at St John's Hospital for intensive support
  • Prescribe Nicotine Replacement Therapy or Zyban if appropriate on the advice of the SCC
